Canadian Citizenship

RCIC in good standing with the CICC.

Canadian citizenship is the final step for many permanent residents who have built their lives in Canada. The process involves meeting physical presence requirements, filing taxes where required, demonstrating language ability if applicable, and in most cases passing a citizenship test.

At Upside Immigration Consulting Inc., we help you review whether the basic requirements appear to be met, calculate your physical presence accurately, and prepare an application that is complete and well organized.

How do I apply for Canadian citizenship as a permanent resident?

In general, adult applicants must be permanent residents, meet the physical presence requirement of at least 1,095 days within the five years before signing the application, file taxes if required, demonstrate language ability, and pass the citizenship test if applicable. The application must be complete, accurate, and properly supported with evidence.

  • You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the five years before signing
  • Some time in Canada before permanent residence may count in limited circumstances
  • You must file taxes as required for at least three tax years within the five year period
  • Language ability in English or French must be demonstrated for most adult applicants between 18 and 54
  • Most applicants between 18 and 54 must pass a citizenship knowledge test

Eligibility Review

Before applying for citizenship, it is important to confirm that the basic requirements appear to be met. This includes reviewing your physical presence in Canada, confirming your tax filing history, and identifying any prohibitions that could affect eligibility. A careful review before submission helps avoid incomplete applications or unnecessary delays.

We can help with
  • physical presence calculation and review
  • tax filing history review
  • prohibition and eligibility check
  • passport and travel history organization

Physical Presence Calculation

The physical presence requirement is one of the most important parts of a citizenship application. In general, adult applicants must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days within the five years before signing the citizenship application. Days spent in Canada as a temporary resident before becoming a permanent resident may count in some circumstances, but only at half value and subject to a cap.

An accurate physical presence calculation requires a complete and organized record of all time spent inside and outside Canada. Errors in this calculation can cause delays or refusals, so it is important to verify the numbers carefully before filing.

We can help with
  • travel history organization and verification
  • physical presence calculation
  • pre-PR days analysis
  • day counting and documentation review

Application Preparation and Submission

A citizenship application must be complete, accurate, and supported by the correct documents. Incomplete applications are returned, and errors or inconsistencies can lead to requests for additional information or refusals. We help you organize your supporting documents, review your application for accuracy and consistency, and make sure it is ready for submission.

We can help with
  • document checklist and review
  • application form review
  • supporting document organization
  • letter of explanation where required
  • application completeness check before submission

What you should know

Citizenship applications are carefully reviewed, and errors in physical presence calculations or incomplete documentation are common reasons for delays.
